So this is part two of a video I made last week and uploaded, not realizing it was going to get as much attention as it did. And so I made a video on how to be an on staff hypnotist. This video won't make much sense unless you watched the first one. So go back and watch the first one. I'll put a link to it in the comments below. No more ads, no more marketing. I'm not selling you anything and I'm not trying to market. That's not the point of this video. Anyway, I really do want to help you guys. So. Okay. I made a video last week. It was all about becoming the on staff hypnotist and why I think many of you should do that. I got a ton of private messages from people asking for questions about, oh, can you give me advice on how to do it? Oh, my gosh. That resonates with me. That's exactly what I've been looking for. And questions sort of like that. And awesome. I didn't realize I was gonna strike a nerve on this one. This is great and it is the way I did things and I do like it. And for a lot of people, it's not for everybody.

So I want to make this video real quick and I'm going to get to more of your questions. I'm going to make another one just based on like a lot of the feedback I've been getting. But I wanted to get this one out really fast because I don't want anyone to spin their wheels and start creating fantasies and false hopes. So this video is a level setting, kind of stress testing video and grounding. So here we go. This, what I'm talking about, is not the easy way. There isn't an easy way. This is just a simpler way. There's fewer moving parts. But that doesn't make it easier. It just means each part is more valuable and more critical. And it also means you can have fewer things go wrong. So I just want to kind of start there.

I also want to say that this is not the Plan for anybody who considers themselves a rebel or a renegade. This is a plan for people who are really willing to do things other people's way, because that's really the key to this. You don't get to practice your way when you're on staff somewhere. You will practice their way. And so where you go on staff matters, obviously. And you pick like, you don't just go sign up for someplace you're like diametrically opposed. That's, you know, that's an employment agreement. So, you know, the idea is you find places where you are philosophically aligned and then you go work there. So let me get into a few pieces of this.

Number one, the people who will be employing you if you do this are definitely going to have higher standards than you do for a lot of things that you currently aren't thinking about. So you can't just apply your model of how a private practice should work to them and call that good enough. It becomes your job to learn how to do things their way, not your way. And that's the deal. It's not the only deal. There's a lot of others. But let me back up a second and just say that this is like a really boring, normal thing in the world of like clinical supervision. This is a really boring and normal thing with just about every state licensed mental health job there is. And it's built into like your mandatory clinical hours you need in order to get your license.

And it's different state by state and license by license. So I won't get into any of the details of it, but that's what you have to do. You want to go become a chemical dependency counselor, you want to become a social worker, you want to become a psychiatrist, you want to become a psychologist, you want to become a marriage and family therapist, you want to become a thing. In any given state, there are rules for how many hours you are required to work before you can get a license and be a professional. Because there is this idea that until you've done it a certain number of times for real, you're not ready to be a professional. And somehow the hypnosis industry has omitted that from the training a long time ago.

And if you want to think back to who was in charge of training and certifying in the mid to late 70s, you can start kind of peeling back this super not at all complicated mystery of how we got here. Now we can make decisions and commentary on if it's where we are, is where we want to be, but that's not the point of this video is just talking about the realities of where we are. Most of the other places where you would be in a coaching, helping, therapeutic, clinical modality, you're sort of built into your training is, oh, and then I need to go get my 300 hours or whatever. And so it's 300 client hours that you are just going and giving away, basically. And in doing so, you're saying to a mental health clinic, hey, I need my hours.

You know how this works? It's indentured servitude via internship. Help me get my hours, I'm going to be slightly better than a traffic cone at playing defense. And we'll all do great. And that's how it works. And then they get better and better. They build a professional network, they build a client load of people who trust them. And a few of those people, they. There's an affinity, there's a connection, right. There's a therapeutic bond. That's great. All these things organically happen to set them up for success. And somehow in the mid to late 70s, we made sure that the hypnosis training industry was not going to have that. And we wouldn't talk about that. Just we would not talk about Bruno, people are calling me. I'm in the middle of doing this. Go away. Sorry, I was supposed to turn that off.

And I'm just gonna keep rolling because that's what this video is. It's just real. Okay, so, yeah, you guys were all sold a bill of goods where, you know, just, there's a hundred hours of training and just get your 50 hours and you get your certificate. You get one weekend of training, one week of training, you do four weekends with me, you'll be one of the best trainers in the best. Okay, well, all the other people who weren't buying magic beans, you know, got told the truth. Hey, come do 500 hours of classroom and then go do another two to 500 hours in the field, and then you get to be treated like a grown up. So why aren't you treated like a grown up? Because maybe you don't deserve it.

In their mind, by their metric, by their standards, you are still under that number of hours. Okay, well, that's a super solvable thing. But, you know, just sort of know where you are and know what standard means in their world and notice how substandard our standards happen to be. And, and I'll also say this, there are tools to this and you need to think about where you want to be on staff and don't say wherever makes the Most money. Shut up. That's. That's not a good idea. That's not going to work. It's just. It's going to come across as insincere and incongruent and won't work. Like, I did clinic. Like, I just did clinical stuff because it worked for me. I also did some professional athlete stuff, which was fun.

That's where I thought I was gonna go, because that's where I thought I was gonna go. But it turns out clinical, because I'm good at talking to doctors, I'm good at talking to therapists. I'm good at talking to clinicians because I talk like an Aaron Sorkin TV show. And if you talk like an Aaron Sorkin TV show, doctors like it. I also understand how differentials work and that's how doctors work. But that's a whole video. I explained that and how to get medical referrals. That's not what I'm doing. What I'm saying is there's different tools and standards. And if you want to work in medical, dental and clinical, you need to have a basic understanding of critical thinking and just science and anatomy and physiology and biology. That is more than what is required to become a hypnotist.

And they will expect that of you. And if you disappoint them in that category, you. You have failed the test, which. Let's talk about that for a second. You can't play a numbers game and make this work. You can't send emails out to every doctor in your area. You can't send a. You can't go door to door with business cards and leave them with the receptionist to set up a meeting with the doctor. That is not good enough. That is still too much of a numbers game. That is still too impersonal. You will never make it with that strategy. It's too hard. And the reason I know that is because I did it. I tried that and it doesn't work. Melissa Roth was kind of able to do that. Different time and place.

Also, Melissa Roth had a background in pharmaceutical sales, and that meant she knew how to get past receptionist to get to the doctor. And she knew all those tricks from being in pharmaceutical sales. And she trained me in medical hypnosis and she talked to me about that and she taught me, she told it to me, but I wasn't good enough at it because I had never been in pharmaceutical sales. And so I had to find my own way. And this isn't a video about exactly how to do that. My point is there are minimum standards of competency. And there are minimum skill sets and tools that are required in any given place. And you need to be aware of what those are.

And I don't know what those are for the space you're thinking about because I'm talking to a cell phone and I don't know. Oh, also, how about this? Before we go any further, let's just take a minute and say that, like, I'm not like the world authority on, like, the only way to do this. I am talking to my phone and. And you are most likely watching this on Facebook because that's the extent of my marketing knowledge. For better or worse. Like, I'm not even on Instagram. Like, we brought in Jason because Stephanie and I agreed that weren't gonna be able to do 365 and we needed to partner with somebody who could help us build these systems. And obviously Jason is on a very short list and it's been great. And we like working with him and it's wonderful.

And then Jason said we should probably. And then we're like, what about social media? And he's like, I do more this. And what we should talk about is Lester. And so we brought in Lester Fu. And Lester's going to be doing some stuff for the conference that you guys are going to pay attention to. But my point is, I've gotten very lucky that I haven't had to learn marketing. And therefore I don't know how to market the fact that I'm trying to tell you all how to build a reputation, which is what I've done. I have reputation based client marketing, not numbers game. It means that everything weighs more. Each client weighs more. Your successes and your failures matter. But more importantly, your ability to call balls and strikes matters. And that's a metaphor for those of you outside of America.

It's a baseball metaphor. How good is the umpire? Are you calling balls and strikes properly when your favorite team is swinging versus pitching? Right. So the other way to say that is you judge yourself based on your intentions, but you judge others based on their outcomes. That hypocrisy that we all fall prey to sometimes or victim to sometimes. Yeah. So you have to be like really good at accountability and self assessment and honesty in your accounting of things. And you. It's just an important part of this. And if you can't do that, this is not for you. And that's okay. You can still be a lot of wonderful things and not have that. You just need to be an entrepreneur. Because if you're going to be on the team.

You need to be accountable to the team, and you need to be able to make sure that you're servicing their outcomes. And then you need to understand how to navigate, well, who do I work for? The client or the clinician that's employing me? You need to understand how to navigate all of these things, and you need to navigate the ethics of that, the law of that. All those things you actually need. You need to know those answers, not have Scott tell you on Facebook. You need to know the right answers to all that stuff. For example, you can't offer a kickback. That's illegal. Any doctor can that does a kickback and lose their license, and they should. And I wouldn't want to do a kickback plan, and I never did. What I did do was rent space or work for.

And those are the ways where money exchanges hands ethically. And there's just like a minimum standard of knowledge that you need to have in order to do this work. And most of you don't yet have it, and that's okay. It is concealed within effort, and so you can just go get it. And like I said, Melissa was like a detail rep for pharmaceutical sales, so she knew how to do stuff that I didn't know how to do. But I'm good at being disarming and building trust and rapport. And so that's what I did. And in the different locations and the different types of work and the different subspecialties and the different interests and on and on, you find your permutations of the variables that get you what you want. Cool. It's not easy. It is harder.

And when you don't succeed with a client, you have to be able to look that client and your boss in the face and own it and know how to do that. And you need to tell the boss that you'll be able to do that. And you can't swing them. Swing with. How well does hypnotherapy work compared to certain analysis psychoanalysis after this many sessions. Don't. Don't cite that. Don't cite that thing. You know, the one like that, the three percentages. I was wrong to cite it 15 years ago. It was a mistake. And it's a mistake if you're doing it now. I. And the reason it's a mistake is because the guy who published that has asked us not to, because it's misleading in the way it comes across. And we don't want to be misleading in putting our best foot forward.

So don't use it. Look for things that are credible and calmer and not too good to be true. You don't have to have 100% success rate. You don't have to be a silver bullet. You can just be of service and you can make the employer's life a little bit easier. You can fill an empty chair for him or her. You can use an office during an admin day when it's sitting vacant. You can help with problem patients that have been bothering them. You can be another bullet point on the things that they offer. Oh, how about this one? Oh, my gosh. Just for the people who stayed till the end. I was a mentor for the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association a billion years ago. And I had a mentee and were talking about being on staff. She lived in Palm Springs.

And I said, there's all these spas in Palm Springs, like in the desert. Just go be an on staff hypnotist at a massage spa place. And she did. And then there was a hypnotist who did the same thing at Caesar's Palace. I forget his name years ago. He's a good guy. And it was just, hey, you just made a whole bunch of money playing blackjack and you're all amped up or hey, you're on vacation but you're still thinking about work. Come drop 100 bucks in the spa and relax. And that guy had to deal with Caesars. So just you could use spas as an example. You don't have to be clinical. And that's a whole different style of person.

So I just want to encourage you to think about this, but think about it critically and what it really takes because I think some of you just started fantasizing that this was going to be the easy way out. And I promise it's just different. Also, most of you who do this will at some point want to graduate to being a business owner. And then you're going to learn the marketing stuff because most of you are going to have to. Most of you aren't going to get as lucky as I did because I got really lucky in addiction work because of my timing with Obamacare. And I just, I was in the right place at the right time on that and you aren't because it was then and who knows what's going to happen next? But that.

So, yeah, I mean, spasmodic professional sports teams, minor league sports teams, internships, hours playing by their rules, these are the kinds of things that you. And also understand what their minimum standards are.
