Primary Blog/HTLIVE Conference/Costume Party at HypnoThoughts LIVE 2026

Key Points:

  • Conferences Exist to Make You Better With Clients: The purpose of attending a hypnosis conference is to learn from practitioners who are succeeding so you can help more people — not to build a speaking career or gain status within the industry. That recognition is a side effect, never the goal.
  • Arrive With a Hit List, Not Just a Schedule: Reach out to presenters before the event, identify who you most want to learn from, and treat every meal and hallway conversation as a deliberate mentorship opportunity. The practitioners who transform their careers at conferences show up with specific questions and specific people in mind.
  • In-Person Access to Experts Is Irreplaceable: The informal moments — breakfast tables, post-session drinks, hallway conversations — deliver insights that no online course or recorded training can replicate. Being physically present with the people doing the best work in the field is the real product you are purchasing with a conference ticket.
  • Costume Parties Dissolve Hierarchy on Purpose: Making respected presenters look silly and approachable is a deliberate strategy to lower the social barriers that prevent newer practitioners from having honest, high-quality conversations. Community and candor flourish when everyone is dressed like an idiot together.
  • Celebrate Conferences That Know What They Are: Events that succeed have a clear identity and serve a specific audience rather than trying to be everything to everyone. Recognizing and respecting the distinct purpose of each conference in the industry raises the quality of the entire ecosystem for practitioners and clients alike.

Okay, everybody, this video has theme for this year's costume party. And also the reason why we have costume party is going to be in this video. But back up, where have I been and why have I not been making videos the last few weeks? It's because I don't like to make videos the weeks of other hypnosis conferences because I want them to own the news cycle. There is another hypnosis conference happening in Europe this weekend that should be a lot of fun. But there have just been three others on top of each other. The IMDHA Conference, the Heartland Hypnosis Conference and the Irish Hypnosis Conference, which were three wonderful conferences because they all know what they're trying to be and they're all trying to be something different than each other. And that's great. You know, IMDHA obviously Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy association, it's clinical.

00:45

Irish Hypnosis Conference was very family, community feel similar to hypnotherapy. And Heartland is more stage and local stuff for that community. So three great conferences trying to be specific things and succeeding at them. Cool. Congratulations to everybody who put those events on. Genuinely good work. I know how hard it is and I hope you're all really happy and reflecting positively on what you've just accomplished. And let's get into it. So we have a costume party at hypnothoughts Live every year. We always have. Sometimes it's also coincided with a bowling tournament. A lot of credit goes to Kelly woods and the Hypnotic Women for starting the pajama party tradition. And they also did like a flash mob in year two, I think maybe year three.

01:39

But Kelly really pushed that and it's been a wonderful thing because it helps us to not be taken so seriously and to reduce hierarchies in the industry. And that's the point, is to humanize the presenters. And let me also explain why we have the party. It's not just about humanizing presenters. There is something that I would just like to address directly based on conversations I've been having at other conferences over the last few months. Why people should go to hypnosis conferences. I think this is obvious, but it needs to be said based on the conversations I've been having. The goal of going to a hypnosis conference is not to earn the right to speak at hypnosis conferences. That's not why we do this.

02:24

The goal is not to become a presenter if you're going to hypnosis conferences so that you can speak at conferences and feel important at Hypnosis conferences. You have missed the point. The reason we go to the conferences is to learn from people who are succeeding so that we can be more effective at doing work with our clients. The reason I have a great career and a great track record and have worked in clinical office after clinical office and helped thousands of clients is because I got great instruction at conferences. Melissa Roth, Paul Durbin, Roger Moore. I mean, a ton of people helped me. Dan Cleary and Michael Elner and I mean, just on and on. All these people, like hundreds of people.

03:17

Roy Hunter, all these people, some of whom are still with us, some of whom like Michael aren't, and I am, and Paul Durbin, also not with us anymore. I am so lucky that I got to meet with those people at conferences and learn what worked for them. And so the reason you go to a conference is because you get to find James Tripp at breakfast and just sit at his table and pick his brain, and he's just there and he's happy to share his thoughts. And. And then you go sit with Shawn Michael Andrews and you hear the work he was just doing with Hans Rudy in Ukraine, and you get inspired by what is possible.

03:54

And you actually ask interesting questions to Mike Mandel or Melissa Tears or Randy Light or Shelley Stockwell, who's been wonderful to me my entire career, and on and on. And all these people that you get to just be in person with, you get to go find Surrender Gill and say, hey, I've been a fan of your work online. I'd like to talk with you in person about it. You find whoever Adam Cox and you say, I'm a fan of your podcast. I'd like to talk with you. And you get these in person moments where you find out how they do the work and what they're doing differently than you and what they're doing better than you and what you're doing better than some of them, and you find the right fits.

04:37

My career was changed by going to conferences, and that's why I put on a conference. The reason I became successful was because of the mentorship I earned at conferences. That should be your goal. You should go to every conference with a goal of who you are going to meet and what kinds of questions you're going to ask them. I'm totally serious. You should go with a hit list and you should send them messages in advance through their website, through Facebook, however, you can get in touch with those presenters. You reach out to them in advance and say, hey, you're speaking at the Whatever conference, I'm going to be there. I would love to pick your brain while I'm there. And they say, great.

05:17

And when you're there, you're like, hey, I sent you that message saying I wanted to just shake your hand and ask you a couple questions. And now all of a sudden, you've bought them a drink and you're sitting down and you just got an hour of time with a small group of people, two of which are role models to you. And you just get to be a fly on the wall while they have banter and you get to interject. And as your confidence grows, you interject more. And as your career grows, you lead the conversation more. And you notice other people are on the fly on your wall. But the goal isn't to be important at the conference. That is a side effect. That is a result. The goal is to have the conference make you better at doing the work and seeing clients.

06:02

So we throw a costume party to make those fly on the wall moments happen and to make it more disarming. So it's not quite as scary to sit with Mike Mandel because he's dressed like an idiot. Now, maybe Mike wasn't the best example because half his shirts don't have sleeves, but you get the point. The idea is to have these vaunted big names be silly and unimportant so that we can have high quality communication with them, so we can have community and deep conversation that transforms your private practice and helps you help more people. So this year's theme is Viva Las Vegas. I know it seems kind of on the nose, but there's a lot of reasons why it's a fantastic one. So costume themes for Viva Las Vegas.

06:47

The shirt, which you will see, we are going to start selling the shirt is your backup plan. If you can't come up with a costume, it will have a Viva Las Vegas theme on it so you can be fun at the party without packing something extra. That's nice. But also, if you really want to be extra, which a lot of you do, Viva Las Vegas gives you jumpsuit, Elvis. It gives you the Rat Pack. It gives you all sorts of showgirls and opportunities to play it big and small. And so Viva Las Vegas is theme for this year. The shirt will be your backup plan, but I hope many of you go extra because that's the opportunity for us to have a party in one room and great conversations in the other and to get everyone mingling and having a blast.

07:34

That's theme for this year. That's the reason for it. And I hope you guys all have been having a great time in my adventured absence and Stephanie and I will be following up with all of you soon about a lot of other logistics. The app is coming, schedule is getting produced into the final version that you guys like to see and you know, we are checking boxes, pulling levers and getting close. We're in the final two months now. Make sure you have your ticket for hypnothoughts live. Make sure you've booked your travel stuff, all your logistics. Oh my goodness, the number of people we're talking to about travel logistics. One airline has offered to support Spirit Airlines and cap those tickets. There's all sorts of stuff for us to be aware of but this video isn't about any of that.

08:20

You'll be hearing about logistics later. Right now this is the party and the why and congratulations to the people who just put on their conferences and let's just keep it going.
